Question on Fallout 3: New Vegas (Companions and armor & weapons)?

When you throw weapons and armor into their inventory, do they ruin the durability while using it? Would I have to continuously repair the armor and weapons, as with ammo? I'm using Boone and he's using the Anti-Material Rifle. But, it's a pain in the rear to repair it! =/
