Why do girl friends act vile and rude like this?

Some people are relationship obsessed and base their self worth on if they have a boyfriend or girlfriend or not. I have male friends who do the same... I usually try not to pay too much attention to them. It's rather sad. They think just because they have someone they are automatically more important and you need to ask about their relationship constantly.
