308 is definitely NOT going to work in your VTR. The good news is that you can buy the 7.62X54R ammo and a Mosin Nagant to shoot it for 200 bucks...probably less than the same number of 308 rounds. It would be like getting the gun for free! Be warned: the milsurp ammo is going to be corrosive.
