Why does the media keep referring to Romney as the GOP "front-runner"?

As a conservative I find this to be completely false. I don't know anyone who supports him (besides the liberal press) or anyone that would vote for him, and I don't see the GOP leadership fawning all over him either. yet the press makes it out like hes a shoo-in for the nomination.
