Can you identify this rodent?

We were recently in a ski resort in the French Alps near Chamonix (almost deserted this time of year) when we saw a small rodent scamper across the car park. It was about the size of a kitten and its fur was fawn and white. It had a small thin tail which it held upright as it dashed along. Can any of you experts out there identify it for me?
